Like most of the couples I photograph, Sam and Matt found out about me through a mutual friend whose wedding I photographed. Sam called me excited to be engaged and wanted to meet to talk about her wedding. Meeting with Sam and Matt was like meeting up with old friends. Their warm personalities complimented each other and their infectious laughter could be felt throughout the coffeeshop. I knew it was going to be fun working with the two of them on their Noah’s Event Center Wedding.
The day started off Noah’s Event Center, at a new wedding venue in Auburn Hills right across the street from Oakland University. The large windows and open floor plan served as a great place for Sam and her bridal party to get ready for her wedding day. As the day began, Sam gave me her wedding attire to photograph and handed me a photo book of the two of them that she was giving Matt after their first look. The book documented their relationship from the very beginning: 9th grade at Bishop Foley High School. What touched me though, we in the back were handwritten vows that Sam would later read to Matt.
As I walked with Matt up to the first look location, he was excited. Nothing could wipe the smile off of his face. Their first look was a very touching moment: authentic, emotional, and long-lasting. Afterwards, they each took turns and read personal vows to each other. Part funny, part serious; it was something that I had never seen before but definitely will be encouraging future brides to consider. Noah’s Event Center Wedding is a gorgeous venue located in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Following the ceremony, and near panic when the best man couldn’t find the rings, we headed to Oakland University’s campus to photograph the bridal party. The architecture on campus provided a beautiful backdrop for formals. As we were packing up, I noticed a fountain go off and create a wall of water. Sam and Matt were kind enough to get back out of the party bus and do another round of shooting. It turned out to be one of their favorite pictures from the day.
My favorite image from the day took place outside of Noah’s Event Center. I believe nothing compliments the beauty of people as much as the beauty of nature. When I saw the edge of the forest located outside of Noah’s Event Center, I envisioned a shot that encompassed stillness, simplicity, and beauty. Using a Profoto B2 with a grid, I hid the light behind a tree, pose Sam and Matt, and snapped the shot. For me, this is my favorite shot of the night and of the season so far, simply because it is unlike anything I have done before. The photo definitely made their Noah’s Event Center Wedding portfolio.
Sam and Matt ended the night surrounded by family and friends, dancing the night away and living out their dreams they first dreamt years ago in the halls of their high school. Congrats you two; it is well deserved.
