Engagement Session at the Detroit Institute of Art

Engagement Session at the Detroit Institute of Art

About a year ago, Sam called me up.  “Any chance you can make it out to Chicago this weekend?  I am going to propose to Laura.”  Sam knew I was doing more proposal photography through my sister company, She Said Yes! Detroit.  My schedule was full, but if I planned it just right, I would be able to be there to document the occasion.  The proposal was perfect.

Three weeks ago, Sam called me up again.  “What does your schedule look like for an engagement session at the Detroit Institute of Art?”  It was questionable whether or not we were going to be able to shoot.  Luckily, the forecasted rain held off and we were able to squeeze in their engagement session at the Detroit Institute of Art.

Spending time with Sam and Laura, it becomes obvious why they are a team.  Both are driven, hard working individuals and yet incredibly kind and supportive of each other.  They finish each other’s sentences.  They sneak tender touches in when no one is looking.  Laura still gets giddy and tries to hide it when around Sam.  While I love the way their engagement session at the Detroit Institute of Art came out, I think what made the photos isn’t the light, posing, or composition, but the genuine tenderness between Sam and Laura.

After a lap around the DIA, we crossed Woodward Ave. and visited the Detroit Public Library. I have only shot here a few times before and loved the simple, yet beautiful, architectural details.

With Sam and Laura being all dressed up, I wanted to find the perfect backdrop for a dramatic image.  For that, we headed towards the abandoned train depot in Corktown.

Congratulations Sam and Laura!  Thank you for allowing me to join another part of your journey.
