Proposal in the Detroit Institute of Arts

Monish sent me a short email stating that he was looking to propose to his girlfriend this weekend. Yes, THIS WEEKEND! I knew we had to get on the phone and get to work. He did some research and had a few ideas, but nothing that really spoke to his heart. As Monish and I spoke and I got to know a little bit more about Emily, it became pretty clear: he should have his proposal in the Detroit Institute of Arts. When Monish mentioned Emily loves murals, I suggested he propose in the Diego Rivera Court at the DIA. We planned for the proposal in the Detroit Institute of Arts to take place in the morning, right after they opened their doors so the room would be empty.

Typical Michigan, we got drenched with freezing rain the night before, making Emily and Monish’s drive down from Flint a bit dicey. The roads were icy, but Monish was a man on a mission. After Monish texted me “Parking,” I knew it was only a few minutes before it was time for his proposal. I have to give credit to the staff at the DIA; they were more than accommodating, allowing me to move two signs and stepped aside, allowing Emily and Monish to have a private moment for their proposal in the Detroit Institute of Arts. I have never photographed a proposal at the DIA and was a little nervous to do so, but experience was nothing short of perfect.

Monish and Emily walked to the center of the room and admired the murals. With a long hug to signal he was ready to propose, I raised my camera and waited for Monish to take a knee.

Emily, adorably, was taken aback and surprised at what Monish was doing. It was a good surprise though as she enthusiastically said “yes.”

After a few minutes of private celebration, we staged a little engagement session inside the beautiful DIA. As we walked around the DIA, I found out the DIA was the location of their second date! How perfect and memorable of a spot.
